A Royals Success Story

My  name is Kelechi Amonu Jones. I grew up in Imo State, Nigeria, where American football was neither played professionally nor locally. As a child, I watched countless American movies where the sport was showcased, and it was then that I fell in love with the game—even though I had no opportunity to play it.

When I eventually moved to the United States, I promised myself that I would do everything within my power to excel in this sport, despite having little to no prior knowledge of it.

I enrolled at Edmonds College, initially believing they had a football program. Unfortunately, they did not, so I joined cross country instead. Despite my size—standing 6’3” and weighing 213 pounds—I competed. I knew the sport wasn’t for me, but my determination to compete kept me going.

Later, I asked a colleague about opportunities to play football. At the time, I mistakenly thought the only levels available were college football and the NFL. I didn’t realize there were other avenues. After reaching out and filling out applications, I eventually earned a spot with the Everett Royals. One year later—after intense training, discipline, and hard work, with no prior experience in football—I was honored to receive the Rookie of the Year award while playing for the Everett Royals.

The Royals have helped me grow both on and off the field. Beyond football, they offer programs that build life skills, such as their financial literacy program, which has been instrumental in helping me manage and improve my financial well-being. Thanks to these opportunities, I am now a full-time business owner with Legal Shield and a part-owner of a small business in North Everett. The support and resources provided by the Royals have not only elevated my game but also empowered me to succeed in life outside of football.
